October 2003 Archives

i think the chinese hall hosted this movie event at the WEL movie room, and according to the the tomatometer, it's a really good movie. hrmm... i swear, that thing is broke!
phil's review: very sloooow... overly artsy... and the fact that they play one of two songs over and over again drove me mad! i understand why critics at film festivals love this kind of stuff, but i think playing out the whole "longing for one another" thing in real-time (or in some scenes, 3x slo-mo) was a bit overdone. the emphasis is on bitter when they say the ending is bittersweet.
philatlaptop: everytime i walk by you
philatlaptop: i'll sing that slow dramatic song from that movie
sweetbjesus6: does your heart flutter?
sweetbjesus6: heheh
philatlaptop: no, but i have bowel movements
sweetbjesus6: heh
sweetbjesus6: man, that movie really got to me
philatlaptop: really?
sweetbjesus6: yeah
philatlaptop: you could really connect to the chinese way of thinking?
sweetbjesus6: shuhsheh
philatlaptop: whoa
philatlaptop: bustin' out some mad chinese there
sweetbjesus6: heh
sweetbjesus6: actually i treasure those yearnings before things get started
sweetbjesus6: almost as much as the thing itself
sweetbjesus6: feels like i'm living in a novel
philatlaptop: you mean...
philatlaptop: yearnings for...
philatlaptop: oh.
philatlaptop: don't worry, your secret is safe with me
it seems that lately i've reached an impasse in nearly everything i've been trying to do, and it's starting to become frustrating. progress must be made, yet despite my efforts, i find myself back from where i started.
as an engineer, i'm tempted to just try everything that comes to mind, be it trying to write that damn song for songfight.com, trying to get things to work in lab, or that other thing... but there's much to lose (money and time, among other things), so i'm forced to act deliberately.
so if you see me in the next few days with a pensive brow and my hands pressed against my head, don't mind me. just trying to get out of this block...

hrmm... should have been much lower than that, but as Pablo Villaca of CINEMA EM CENA best puts it...
"A idéia do amor trágico soa romântica para estes casais, o que é curioso. Mas, no geral, o filme é extremamente enfadonho."
what does the philometer say? don't watch it. and despite what jonathan says, gwyneth paltrow is not that hot.

... forced to clean up leaves (Oktoberfest @ Duke, 2003)
Oktoberfest this year was pretty good, although it started a bit too late in the day. I think a lot of the merchants lost money because lunchtime is usually the busiest time at these events. But, the beautiful weather, live bands, lots of food and games... you really can't go wrong with that! The beer didn't come until 4pm though. I don't know why they can't let us start getting drunk in the morning...

vijay actin' cool, bollywood-style! (Oktoberfest @ Duke, 2003)
I have to admit, Duke has been doing a pretty good job in the past couple years bringing not just Oktoberfest and Springternational, but just a lot of random outdoor events on Friday afternoons... Its such a great feeling walking out from the depths of Hudson Hall onto the Chapel quad to be greeted by street vendors, cool music, and as lame as strongman and the sumo-wrestle suits are, its always entertaining to watch :)
thanks to GI Joe who left a comment in the last post, i remembered i wanted to post a hilarious series of spoofs on the educational bits that used to come on after every gi-joe episode. man, if you ever used to watch them, you'll absolutely love these. most of them are completely random and nonsensical, and if you're into that kind of humor, check out http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail.html.

had such an awesome run today! fifty three laps in wilson gym (five miles total) and i wasn't even out of breath! i was aiming for six miles, but had to meet someone for dinner so i cut it short :/ i never really understood the "runner's high" until now, but i think by now all the biking to school and short morning runs that i've been doing has finally paid off =D
on a totally different note, the amount of daily spam i'm getting is getting out of hand. i woke up this morning to 13 spam letters and have gotten a dozen more since then. i think i'm averaging around 25/day making it about 80% of my total daily e-mails. eesh, i'm especially getting sick of these "DISCREET OVERNIGHT PHARMACY" ones, which i get about ten times a day (does anyone else get these?!?!)
