written by arvo part, "mirror in mirror" is perhaps one of the most beautifully simplistic compositions i've ever heard. written for piano and cello, a canvas is created by delicate and simple f major triads upon which the hesitant, airy tone of the cello reflects. the theme is full of unreconciled and impossible longing, as suggested by the unavoidable return to a central note, the mirror line. and even when the cello does attempt to depart, its only by deliberately innocent scalar rise and falls. a true masterpiece, in my opinion, written for those who want to live, to love, to surrender.
