"years ago, the CIA spent a ton of money on research regarding human behavior. they wanted to find out what made people tick. see if there was anything they could protocolize to predict human responses. the _only_ thing that correlated to future behavior was past behavior. and it was a very strong correlation. what i'm trying to say is this: when someone does stupid things, it means they're stupid. even if you think they're smart. and there's no excusing stupid behavior, unless you really wanna hang out with stupid people... patterns of behavior. it's the KEY."

"hrm."

"i'm telling you man. you lack the statistical power of the CIA."

this reminds me of the scene from the first matrix movie, where cypher sets up morpheus, neo, trinity, et al. to get trapped in that building (you know, the scene where neo goes "whoa... deja vu.")... and poor mouse, up on the top floor, tries to get out, but all the windows and doors have turned into brick. yeah, so... is this a joke?

i stood in front of this building, thinking long and hard as to why this "entrance" bothered me... clearly, whatever hole that was ripped through the side of the building must have taken down whatever door that was there before... and since they thought "we don't really need a door," they tried to instead just patch up that side of the building. but after they botched up the repair by using three different kinds of brick, all different from the original, they must have realised how ugly it looked, so decided to erect another door frame. and in doing so i guess they must have thought that it needed a room number, so they added 601... with the 1 italicized. which is weird, because none of the other doors on that buildling have any numbers on them...

i have a funny feeling that ligett & myers produced something more than just cigarettes in this particular tobacco warehouse...

i put up some new songs on this here page... moonbabies - i'm so insane but so are you and MC 한새 - 사랑이라고말하는마음의병 (the latter part should look like a bunch of squares if your windows version is asian-fied, in which case, sucks for you!). you might have to refresh your web browser since i think it caches the file. aight, had a long-ass day so time to say payeece!

man, this forecast better be right! sunny and 60s on thursday!
getting sooo sick of the cold and snow and ice and falling on my ass... tennis anyone?

study time!
canon s200 digital camera, auto

i've been drinking an inordinate amount of ethanol in the past several weeks, be it bars, at dinners, or just sittin' around at home. but some of this stuff is just too yummy to pass up. especially if its just sitting at my desk, wigging out over uniform electromagnetic plane waves. :p (look closely, and you'll see some old electromagnetic theory notes in the foreground. wasn't my note-taking neat back then??.)

it's snowing yet again here. i'm so damn sick of snow. i've been waiting for the weather to let up a bit so i can go out and take some pictures, minus the soiled mounds of snow leftover on the sidewalks. i have a couple projects in mind, which i suppose i'll begin tomorrow, snow or shine. maybe i'll draft them with a digicam, then come back later w/the slr.

big pretty and the red rockets. fun! i spent my valentine's day with several pints of newcastle and this local indie band. the asian dood was funny cuz he plays the cello. and kind of looks like yo yo ma.

i saw this quote and my first reaction was "how trite." . . . then i thought "man, she has really nice handwriting!" wasn't that a good story?

savages! (look at the extended entry for pictures, and you'll know what i mean)

bbq spare ribs were on the tonight's, hand marinated and prepared by em, accompanied by my mom's super-secret mash potatoes recipe. and what would a meal be without dessert? mmm, pecan pie. forced into my room due to the filming if gianmarco's new cooking show (to air at a documentary film class near you), i busted out the 밥상 for some true asian-style eating (i.e. on the floor).

tonight's sucky movie? lost in translation. i won't even go there.

hey, check it out! my blog is über-cool now! clickity-click, and bam! music. alright, so whatever, you've seen it before on a million web pages... just be glad i at least keep it off by default!

so, uh... it should be pretty obvious. click to play. click again to stop. click. click. click click click!

this week's english selection is evanescence - my immortal, just cuz it always plays when i'm standing in line at alpine bagel to get my carbo-fix. the song kind of gets annoying, especially the stupid lyrics (and the association with the movie daredevil). but i love the oscillation between A chord and C#m.

the korean song comes from a movie (시월애) that my brother has been bugging me to get. so after waiting an hour searching and two hours queued up in our favoriate unnamed, completely-legal file sharing program, i was finally able to get it. yeah, it kinda sounds sappy. whatdya expect? but it was such a good movie!

"제발 가지말아요. (전 지현!) 제발 나를 떠나가지 말아요!!" :p

nope, not my pics this time. not sure who took 'em o_0

ahh! just got back from monday night pubbin' @ the lib with kay, and now these photos are trippin' me out! ain't they trippy? f'sheezy.

you know, after living seven years in north carolina, my patience is running thin waiting for something exciting to happen here... i definitely need to get the hell out of this shithole. yup, folks! i've finally reached the conclusion that this place thoroughly sucks. t-h-o-r-o-u-g-h-l-y s-u-x-0-r-s. food sucks, people suck, and as nice as southern hospitality can be, sometimes being curt and getting to the fucking point is better than being amicable. ya dig?

farragut north stop - washington d.c.
tri-x 400 @ 800, pentax 50mm f/2 @ f/2.8

i recall in my high school geoscience class the construction of the d.c. metro lines... it involved a huge ass drill (the scale was literally the diameter of the entire tunnel) slowly churning away dirt and rock with a bunch of doods behind it putting up scaffolding against the newly borne hole so the entire thing wouldn't collapse on them. sometimes the easiest way to get a big job done is just to use big tools. how's that for philosophy?

under the i-95 richmond overpass - richmond, virginia <
i>tri-x 400 @ 800, pentax 50mm f/2 @ f/2

after 49 trips or so from durham to d.c. and back again, i had never really noticed how beautifully constructed and well-placed this building was against the i-95 overpass running through the heart of downtown richmond until a friend pointed it out to me. by day, the building is unlit, and the clock face is black. but by night, they apparently turn on this 50,000W light bulb in the middle of the building, making the clock face a glowing white. i'd hate to be the guy who has to turn on the light switch.

while this isn't the angle i wanted to get (cuz a certain somebody wouldn't let me brave traffic to take the picture), you can see how pleasantly misplaced this building is if you've ever seen the rest of downtown richmond.

p.s. paul or pete - why does this picture look off? could it be to over(under) development? strange...

depth of field experiment
t-max 400 @ 800, pentax 50mm f/2 @ f/2.8

ahhH!!! do you see?! nice shallow depth of field so that everything behind the bathroom door is blurry! digital point-and-shoot cameras have no such flexibility. (sorry, paul, i had one shot left and was next to my bathroom, and i remembered your bathroom shot). oh, behind me in that picture is what is now my brand new dark room (not shown in this pic), built from spare lumber - $3.20 @ home depot!

italian pasta... indian pastry... made by a korean. what more is there to say about this internationally dis-oriented (yup, pun intended) dinner?

this week officially reaches the extent of phil's knowledge on cooking. from here on out, phil will be serving various types of ready-to-make udon, ramen, and frozen-food entrees. nothing says "culinary" like shaking a packet of soup base on top of a dessicated block of noodles drowning in boiling water. (hey, it's all about the timing!)

i went to go watch big fish with youngji at the varsity theatre, in a post-feeding daze. there's such a homey atmosphere to these independently owned theatres that add a certain charm to movies such as these. it was either that, or the single bottle of amstel light in my gut (amstel light being one of 54 of several different types of beers left remaining in my fridge from this past weekend, per request of calorie concious beer-drinkers (ehem! not me!) ).

big fish was quite a refreshing movie. i enjoyed it thoroughly, in sort of a forest-gump story telling meets wizard-of-oz fairy-tailish way. although i hated forest gump. and didn't care too much for the wizard of oz. hrm. but you know, there's something about ewan mcgregor that makes his role in big fish perfect for him. i think it's the fact that i can never break him out of the persona of the heroine addict in trainspotting. which makes all the random, f*cked up things in this movie, well... make sense. i need another hit!
