under the i-95 richmond overpass - richmond, virginia <
i>tri-x 400 @ 800, pentax 50mm f/2 @ f/2

after 49 trips or so from durham to d.c. and back again, i had never really noticed how beautifully constructed and well-placed this building was against the i-95 overpass running through the heart of downtown richmond until a friend pointed it out to me. by day, the building is unlit, and the clock face is black. but by night, they apparently turn on this 50,000W light bulb in the middle of the building, making the clock face a glowing white. i'd hate to be the guy who has to turn on the light switch.

while this isn't the angle i wanted to get (cuz a certain somebody wouldn't let me brave traffic to take the picture), you can see how pleasantly misplaced this building is if you've ever seen the rest of downtown richmond.

p.s. paul or pete - why does this picture look off? could it be to over(under) development? strange...

That is a beautiful picture. I remember passing by that building everytime my family & I drive up to Toronto. It's pretty. I wonder what its called...

different reasons as to why it looks off. reason #1- the roof on the far right is lit up like a light-bulb. weird man. it's distracting, more than attracting. i love the tonality of the roof-top in the middle- it has this great zone 3-4 look that shows the texture of the tiles. if i were you, i would crop out the annoying higher/brighter rooftop.

reason #2- same as reason #1. competing points of interest in the photo make for no point of interest. eye jumps from middle to right. better to lop off right so eye focuses on middle.

this is as much a good lesson in composition as it is exposure. regardless, exposing stuff at night is usually hit or miss, with the inevitable blown highlight and lost shadow detail. focus on subject, and try to get something interesting going on.

it's a good effort, nonetheless.
