we took a road trip to Las Vegas to meet up with my bro and to make some extra $$, and ran into this pretty spectacular cloud cover at 4000ft. other than on an airplane, i've never been this close to the clouds before!

on our trip to california, we stopped by scenic Sedona, Arizona for a day. armed with our navigation unit, which had served us quite well up that point, we came across this interesting little route that it took us. it first it looked like a big blob, but upon closer inspection, it looked more like a malformed artery of some sort. roads like this exist, i kid you not!

it's actually a route that passes through a mountain. make sense now? i'm not really one for heights, so driving on this narrow windy road several thousand feet above sea level, perched up on a cliff waiting for newton's laws of physics to come crashing down on us was no fun. what was it again? potential energy = mgh? h was really big here.

i'm real picky about the coffee that i drink, which shouldn't be surprising since i grew up in the starbucks generation. i've had experiences with many-a-coffee makers, particularly with single-serving systems. by far the best coffee maker i've had is one made by Gaggia, but that'll run you upwards of $2,000. a very close second is a machine by Flavia, which i discovered at my new job, and is a much more affordable alternative. i've tried the tassimo, of course, and its a loud piece of crap in my opinion. so, the winner is flavia!, and it's only 99 bucks!

if you're a regular here at philsblog.com, you would have noticed today that my blog has gone green! (very southern-californiaesque in colour palette, eh?) and gotten a little wider. 150 pixels wider to be exact! enjoy the extra leg room, and just be glad i kept it at less than 1024 pixels for all you out there with monitors less than 17 inches! aren't i nice??

google came out with another nifty feature on google maps called the terrain feature. i guess they got in touch with the us geological survey and plugged in all their topological data to give you yet another excuse to check out your house on google maps. speaking of which, i used to work there doing web design! the us geological survey, not google. and they looked kind of hideous now that i think about it.

anyway, to give you a sense of how hilly our new place is compared to our old place, i give you jpeg below!

what can i say, i'm a nut for candles. and nothing's more economical that tea candles. especially if they're the Ikea 100 pack set on sale for $3.99! that's 16 and two-thirds straight days of light! (each candle burns 4 hours, you do the math). one of our friends back in north carolina got us this really awesome tea-candle lamp. in fact, its awesome enough to post on my blog!

oh, that's where the candles are!
