minae was able to get passes to comicon through work and, coincidentally, one of her friends from her ADF internship was representing her publishing company there. we all met up this this morning and tried to get into the heroes / lost panel, but believe or not, the line was already greater than the 5,000 person capacity of the auditorium!

i can't really get to sleep tonight so i figure i'd play with my friend's zoom lens i'm borrowing for the week. full moon's out tonight, and since i recently watched a discovery channel documentary on the missions to the moon, i figure what the heck. with a 1.6x crop factor, i'm getting an equivalent of a 320mm reach at the long end, which isn't nearly as long as it should be, but for a blog posting should be good 'nuff. i really ought to just fashion myself an extension ring, but that's too much work... even for an insomniac...

man, i love korean pastries. they're distinctly different from american or european pastries in that they tend to be a little less sweet, and a whole lot lighter... they're kind of more like what the idea of pastries should be realized in an actual pastry. in any case, it's more my style. i also love going to coronado island, especially after i found out that it has its own name spelled out on the sand when i was perusing google earth. korean pastries and coronado island, both my faves! so, umm, yeah... this is me having my moment. mom would be proud!

i just got off the phone with a buddy i haven't spoken to in quite a while. told him all about quitting my old job, packing my bags and heading out west after ten years of living in the south, and how minae and i are both absolutely loving it here. it's hard to believe we've only been in san diego for eight months, and even harder to imagine going back to life in north carolina. and to think i almost chickened chick0ned out a couple times, cuz it meant having to leave a safe, albeit unhappy, life back east. unhappy because of work, because everyone i knew eventually left, and because everything was always the same even when things changed. safe, because it's what i had planned from the beginning of grad school and even though it wasn't what i imagined, it was always there for me. hell, i even bought a house there thinking i was gonna stay there forever! or for at least another five years. but if there was ever a time to just say fuckit and go for it, it was then. i guess it's all about risk versus reward.

and so now i'm able to eat korean pastries on a beach on an island that only takes twenty minutes to get to. plus trips to las vegas every two months! sweat!

with the right combination of food and friends, taking repeated shots of this 40 proof rice vodka can be quite a treat. but before you go off downing shots of this stuff, there are a few things about the etiquette of drinking soju and it goes something like this:

  • Soju is usually drunk in group gatherings while eating, unmixed and portioned into individual shot glasses.
  • It is against traditional custom in Korea to fill one's own glass. Instead, it must be filled by someone else at the table. This promotes a spirit of thoughtfulness and camaraderie.
  • To pour a drink, hold the bottle in the right hand with the left hand touching the right forearm or elbow; this peculiar arm position originated from the practice of holding back the sleeve of the hanbok so that it wouldn't touch the table or the food. When receiving a drink, rest the glass in the left palm and hold it with the right hand, perhaps bowing the head slightly to show additional respect.
  • Koreans say "one shot", a challenge to down your glass in one gulp.
  • A glass should not be refilled unless completely empty and should be promptly refilled once empty; it is considered rude to not fill others' glass when empty

  • Some special rules apply when drinking with someone of much higher status, i.e. greater age or rank.
    • When drinking in front of elders (people older than you), you should always turn away from the elder first. Drinking the shot while directly facing the elder is disrespectful.
    • If an elder gives an empty soju shotglass (usually his/hers) to you, it means that the person is going to fill the glass and wants you to drink it. You do not have to drink it bottoms up, but at least you have to act as if you are drinking it (sipping is okay). If you do drink the entire glass, then return the empty glass back to the senior who gave it to you. You are not supposed to return it immediately, but holding it for a long time is considered rude.
    • In Korean culture, using two hands to offer and accept items is considered an act of great respect. Accordingly, if one's glass is going to be filled by a superior, one should hold the glass with both hands. Similarly, when pouring soju for an elder, one holds the bottle with both hands.
  • Among friends of equal social status, it is not necessary to use both hands while pouring or receiving a drink, but may be done out of habit or politeness.

sarah, peter, minae and i all went down to the la jolla coast to watch the fireworks. the great thing about san diego on the fourth is that there are so many places that host huge firework displays that at any given spot you can see two or three of them going on at the same time. i was quite impressed by the la jolla shores' display, but off in the distance we could see the del mar county fair's version, and it looked like they outdone us. nevertheless, the evening was fun, and snapping photos of them was a blast! (har har, pun intended!)

a larger city typically means a larger cultural base and better artistic venues. i'm a bit surprised at myself in having not explored more of these places such as the museum of modern art here in san diego, or listen to groups like the san diego symphony or the la jolla chamber music society. the latter is coming up with a couple of nice programs in august celebrating brahms with piano trios and quartets, so i'll probably be going to check them out. the symphony is also a video game music performance where they'll be playing music from mario, zelda, halo, etc... some old-school tetris, anyone?

it's pretty simple, really... stick out your tongue in front of a camera and a photo of you with your tongue sticking out will eventually wind up on the internets(TM). kudos to a slightly inebriated solis for snapping this picture.

the truth being that solis is really bad at dr. mario. i'm unsure whether he's enjoying or dreading his 0-5 losing streak against anjali, but the moment harks back to an earlier time when we would blame the controllers rather than ourselves for our downfall... the earlier time being 1987, when this game was released and when we were seven. well done, my friend, well done!
