Chapter Two
I'm awaken by a loud crash
followed by poundings on the wall. My heart starts to beat faster
and faster, and all I can do is clench my fists on my pillow.
I open my eyes, and find myself in a vaguely familiar place
- where am i? A soft muffled voice arises from the floorboards
- soft, yet agitated. What's going on? Another voice
presents itself, but much deeper and upset. I grab the first
thing I could find on my bed to cover my ears - what's this?
my cabbage patch doll?! I haven't seen this in... 17 years?
I must be in my old room! It's been so long, I've almost forgotten
about the Transformer toys buried underneath a pile of lego
parts, and the pound puppy attacking the soldiers of the lego
castle I bought on my... 4th birthday... It's still up though
- my lego creations never stay intact for more than a couple
weeks - so it must not have been too long ago.
"SHUT UP!" a loud
yell erupted through the floorboards. "DO YOU WANT TO DIE?!"
Oh God. Not here, please don't tell me I'm back here. "STOP!"
"COME BACK HERE!" Please not here - anywhere
but here!
It was 1983 - we had just moved
into our new house in Virginia, after living a year or two in
a townhouse near our cousins' - or so they were called our cousins.
They were actually friends of my father's, so close that they
were nearly family. But my mother never seemed to like them,
as she did with many of my father's friends... Our new house
was huge - a nice 4 bedroom house with a large kitchen and a
spacious living room. The entire housing complex was new, a promise
of lots of friendly neighbors who were just settling down and
their kids. It seemed as if many happy years would be spent
there and as much as I hated moving, I could only look forward
to our new home. If I only knew...
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING? GET
AWAY!" Mom? "GOD, YOU PISS ME OFF SO MUCH!"
Dad? Argh! What's going on? Why are they yelling so much?
Silence.
I run toward my parents room
- no one's there! I start to cry as I make my way to the stairs
to look for them. "Mom? Dad? Where are you?" I ask.
I slowly make my way down the stairs. "Hello?" I whisper.
"Hell-- What are you doing?!??! STOP!!!!!!"
